Holmgate Primary School and Nursery

Welcome to Year 6

The adults working in Year 6 are:

Miss Broderick – Class Teacher

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Peace

PPA Cover Teacher: Mrs Guy

 Academic Mentor: Mrs Smith

 Read Write Inc (RWI)

We are introducing RWI spelling this year.  The programme teaches spelling patterns and strategies through daily lessons and application in writing.  As a result, there will be no weekly spelling tests, with progress assessed through ongoing classroom activities and written work.

Reading

Reading is still a key part of our curriculum and children will each bring a reading book and a reading record home them. Even though your child is now in Year 6, listening to them read, is still as important as ever as it helps them to improve their fluency and pace - which are vital skills to support with their end of year SATs.  Please listen to your child read at least three times a week and then fill in their reading record.

In Year 6 children will also have a reading comprehension homework to complete once a week, which we will mark together every Friday

PE

Children should bring their PE kit to school on a Monday and keep it in school for the week.

Year 6 have PE every TUESDAY

Year 6 will then have a second PE lesson every ALTERNATE Thursday

Important Dates

This academic year your children will sit their Year 6 KS2 SATS in: Grammar Punctuation & Spelling, Reading and Maths.

Tests begin on Monday 10th May and finish on Thursday 13th May 2027 and all children will need to be in school during this week.

In order to give our children the best possible chance to reach their full potential, please endeavour to keep absence to a minimum prior to these dates.

Seesaw

We will be using Seesaw this year to set work for children and strengthen the link between school and home.  Parents can use Seesaw to communicate with staff and keep up to date with some of the learning taking place in class.

Seesaw is a great way to keep in touch and celebrate learning; however, messages are not monitored continuously throughout the school day, as our priority is teaching and supporting the children.  If your message is urgent or requires immediate attention, please contact the school office, who will ensure the information is passed on promptly.

Please let us know if you are having any difficulties accessing Seesaw so that we can help.
