Welcome to Year 5
The adults working in Y5 are:
Mrs Allen – Class Teacher
Mrs Smith - Teacher
Miss Alden - Trainee Teacher
Teaching Assistant: Mrs Mowbray
Mrs Guy - PPA cover on alternate Tuesdays. She will also cover Mrs Allen's management time every Thursday afternoon.
Our Learning
Our project this term is 'Do we appreciate what we have?' As part of this topic we will be looking at how land is used locally and further afield in tropical rainforests. We will be learning all about deforestation and will begin to investigate what climate change is, as well as explore what we as individuals can do to combat it.
Our project will centre around four concept words: community, protest, stewardship, and common good. We will be exploring what these words mean and making links between the words throughout our learning.
Spelling Shed
We will be continuing to use a scheme called Spelling Shed. Every Friday, children will continue to be tested on their spellings and be given new spellings for the following week. These spellings can then be practised by playing games online to earn points.
Your child’s Spelling Shed login can be found in the first page of their reading record.
Reading
Reading is a key part of our curriculum and children will each bring a colour-banded school reading book home with them. Even though your child is now in Year 5, listening to them read, is still as important as ever as it helps them to improve their fluency and intonation when reading. Please listen to your child read at least three times a week and then fill an entry in their reading record, if you wish..
PE
Children should bring their PE kit to school to keep on their pegs. Our PE kit consists of a white T-shirt and black shorts, joggers or leggings. Children must be able to remove their earrings themselves for PE lessons.
Year 5 have PE on Monday.
This term, Y5 swimming lessons will take place EVERY Thursday morning. Pupils will need to bring their swimming wear, towel and a bobble for long hair as it needs to be tied up for these sessions. Earrings should be removed or a swimming cap worn to cover them up.
Seesaw
We will be using Seesaw again this year to set work for children and to serve as a link between school and home so teachers and parents can communicate easily with one another. Parents / Carers can also access See Saw to see some of the work that the children have been completing during lesson time.
Please let school know if you are struggling to connect to Seesaw so we can help you with this.
