Reading

Reading is such a key part of the KS1 curriculum and we truly value your time and support with home learning in this area.  Children will bring home a school reading book matched closely to their decoding level.  

Listening to your child read is such an important part of our partnership, because it helps them to: improve their recognition of sounds, ability to segment and blend, become more fluent and read aloud with intonation.

Please listen to your child read at least three times a week and then fill in an entry of their reading record.

IMPORTANT DATE

This academic year, Year 1 children will take part in their statutory Phonics Screening checks.  These are scheduled for week beginning: 14 June 2027. 

Spelling and Handwriting

We will be teaching spelling rules every day in school using Read Writ Inc Spelling for the academic year.  Children will not bring spelling lists home and will not have a weekly spelling test.

We will also be teaching Handwriting sessions every day in school using Letter-join.  There are some superb resources/games that your child can access via a tablet at home.  Their login details for this are in their reading diaries.

PE

Children should bring their names PE kit into school, in a bag, on Mondays and will take them home on Fridays to make sure they have it, when needed.

 Y1 have PE on Tuesday and Friday each week (NB some sessions may be outdoors) 

Seesaw

We will be using Seesaw again this year in order for parents to be able to see some of the work that children have been completing during lesson time. Seesaw will also be used to allow teachers and parents to communicate more easily.  If you send a message on Seesaw, please be mindful that we may not see it during the day, as we are teaching so urgent messages should be sent via the school office.

Uniform – Please make sure all uniform and coats are named clearly to help the children look after their own things. If it has a name in and gets misplaced it will eventually make it’s way back to you, if not it may not.

Snack – Fresh fruit is available for the children each day, however, children can bring their own healthy snacks to school for break time. They are allowed to bring a ‘treat’ on Fridays.
