School Council
At Holmgate Primary School and Nursery, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to be heard and to make a positive contribution to school life. Our School Council plays a vital role in ensuring that pupils have a meaningful voice in decisions that affect their learning, wellbeing and wider school experience.
School Council representatives are elected by their peers and work closely with their classes to gather views, share ideas and represent the opinions of others. Through regular meetings, pupils discuss issues that matter to them, suggest improvements and contribute to school developments. They are responsible for listening to their classmates, communicating outcomes and helping to bring about positive change across the school.
A key part of our approach is our whole-school class meeting process, which ensures that every pupil's voice is heard. Through structured discussions, children are encouraged to Discuss, Debate and Decide, learning how to share ideas, listen respectfully to different viewpoints and make fair decisions that reflect the views of the wider community. This process helps pupils understand that their opinions matter and that everyone has a role to play in improving our school.
This work makes a significant contribution to pupils' personal development. Children develop confidence, leadership skills, resilience, communication abilities and a sense of responsibility towards others. They learn how to express their views clearly, work collaboratively and understand the importance of making informed decisions. The School Council also provides opportunities for pupils to become active and responsible citizens, preparing them for life beyond primary school.
The School Council supports the promotion of British Values by encouraging democracy through elections and voting, individual liberty by valuing pupil voice, mutual respect through constructive discussion, and tolerance of different viewpoints through respectful debate. Pupils experience democracy in action and learn how their views can influence positive change within their community.
Our approach ensures that pupils have opportunities to develop leadership, contribute to school life, understand democratic processes and actively participate in their community. By empowering children to shape their school experience, we help them become respectful, responsible and resilient members of society.
